EUROPE ON SCREEN 2023
The European Union (EU) Film Festival âEurope on Screenâ (EoS) was back to its pre-pandemic glory this year with full in-person film screenings. The event brought us closer to European language and culture through a selection of 73 internationally acclaimed European movies. The annually held EOS is a window to the beauty of diversity, even in challenging times, as captured by the creative and world-class European filmmakers and cinema industry. EOS invites the audience to enjoy unforgettable movies, have fun, but also approach social issues transcending the European boundaries and create shared experiences between Europe and Indonesia.
This year marked the festivalâs 23rd edition as one of the most highly anticipated events for film enthusiasts in Indonesia. The festival was held from 16th-25th of June 2023 in Jakarta, Bandung, Bekasi, Denpasar, Medan, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya. In Surabaya the festival was hosted by Institut Francais Indonesia (IFI) and Wisma Jerman. Wisma Jerman screened a total of 12 films on 5 days from Wednesday, 21st of June until Sunday, 25th of June 2023. All screenings were free of charge.
The screenings at Wisma Jerman were opened by Mr. Mike Neuber, Director of Wisma Jerman and Mr. Adi Tedja Surya, the Assistant to the Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Surabaya. The opening session was attended by VIP guests Mr. Wouter Housen, representative of the Consulate General of the United States and Mr. Nishimoto Tadaaki, representative of the Consulate General of Japan.
The EOS films shown at Wisma Jerman presented a wide variety of genres and styles of European cinema to the audience. The selected films ranged from heartbreaking dramas like the Dutch opening film “Narcosis” or the German productions “Talking About the Weather” and “The Path”, to light-hearted comedy, fantasy, and animation, as well as documentaries and true story inspired films with real life stories and real-life characters.
The 5-day festival at Wisma Jerman, was almost filled to the brink with people that had come to enjoy the European movies. In total, the event attracted 475 people over five days. The event was supported by a selection of media including She Radio, NgopibarengID, Harian DISWAY, Berita Jatim and MTB FM. Moreover, the event was also supported by several local movie communities like INFIS (Independen Film Surabaya), SURFACE, and Sinematografi Unair. We would like to thank them for their support and express our gratitude to everyone who participated. We look forward to welcoming you again at one of our upcoming events.
